A massive trove of driver's license data has surfaced on the dark web through a service called Nexus, according to security research firm KrebsOnSecurity.1 The stolen collection comprises more than 153 million driver's license scans, including those belonging to the founder of KrebsOnSecurity, his mother, an FBI assistant director, and numerous security researchers.1
The compromised documents contain high-resolution images of both sides of driver's licenses, as well as additional scans captured under infrared and ultraviolet light spectrums.1 Security experts warn that the infrared and ultraviolet format images could facilitate the creation of forged identification documents capable of bypassing holographic security features used in authentication systems.1 The exposure occurred within hours of a car rental company scanning a driver's license for verification purposes.1
