Women filmmakers remain systematically excluded from career progression in the film industry, according to Christy Mathewson, director of the London Film Festival, despite their strong representation in early-career work.1 The 2024 festival, running from October 7 to 19, featured 251 films, of which 109 (43 percent) were directed by women.1 However, this proportion drops sharply at higher-profile positions: only 2 of the 21 opening gala films were directed by women.1
