Amazon has introduced a new scam-detection feature within Alexa for Shopping, enabling users to verify whether emails, text messages, or calls they receive actually originate from the company.12 The feature addresses a significant problem: approximately 360,000 customers contact Amazon customer service annually to inquire about the authenticity of messages they believe may be from the retailer.1
The AI system analyzes messages by comparing them against billions of communications Amazon has previously sent, examining sender information, content, timing, and message metadata to determine whether a communication genuinely comes from Amazon's systems.12 The system will only confirm a message's authenticity when it can establish complete certainty.2 Users can ask Alexa for Shopping whether a received message is legitimate, and the assistant will evaluate it against Amazon's official communication patterns.
This initiative complements Amazon's earlier effort to combat phishing and fraud, which included publishing a verify@amazon.com email address where customers can report suspicious messages.1 Alexa for Shopping already offers several other capabilities, including personalized product recommendations, shopping guides, product overviews, and shopping list transcription.1
