A major mudslide disaster in Jilong County, Tibet has claimed 21 lives and left 541 people unaccounted for as of September 2 at noon, according to a briefing by the Tibet Autonomous Region government.1 The incident has also resulted in the discovery of 847 personal belongings at the scene.1
Rescue and recovery efforts have mobilized substantial resources to search for survivors and recover remains. Authorities deployed over 2,300 personnel, more than 400 rescue vehicles, and conducted over 800 drone sorties, cumulatively covering a search area of 1.591 million square meters.1 Relief supplies and equipment totaling 5.43 tons have been airlifted to the disaster zone, and communications have been partially restored with 12 base stations back online.1 Over 8,000 search and rescue equipment units have been distributed in total.1
Family members of the victims and missing persons have been actively seeking information about their loved ones. The government has received 876 calls from relatives—448 from within China and 428 from abroad—and has provided accommodation and assistance to 587 family members representing 253 domestic missing and deceased personnel.1
