Maine's highest court ruled on September 1, 2024, that a father may restrict his daughter's participation in evangelical church activities, rejecting the mother's objection to the limitation.1 The decision upheld restrictions imposed by Matthew Bladen, who contended the church constituted a "dangerous and harmful environment" that had caused his daughter to develop anxiety.1 The dispute centered on a child who was 11 years old at the time of the legal proceedings.1
The court found that the church's teachings about the rapture caused psychological harm to the child, particularly after she experienced a panic attack upon hearing these doctrines.1 During one church service, pastor Travis Kerrie delivered a six-and-a-half-minute prayer that mentioned the parents' and child's names approximately thirty times.1 The mother, Emily Beckford, had failed to prevent the church from disparaging the father during its sermons, the court determined.1
Beckford's attorney, Matthew Staver, announced plans to appeal the decision to the United States Supreme Court, with ninety days to file the appeal.1 Liberty Counsel, the legal organization representing Beckford's side, maintains that the ruling violates First Amendment protections.1
