Reform UK has denied conference credentials to three journalists known for scrutinizing the party.1 The excluded reporters are Anna Isaac, the Guardian's city editor; Peter Geoghegan, an investigative journalist; and Michael Crick, a biographer.1 The party initially claimed the credentials had been restored following Guardian inquiries, but subsequently reversed course, characterizing the denial as an administrative error while maintaining its refusal.1
The conference is set to begin Thursday in Birmingham at the National Exhibition Centre, where Reform UK has approved approximately 950 of around 1,000 media applications.1 Isaac's reporting disclosed that party leader Nigel Farage had accepted an undeclared £5 million gift from Christopher Harborne, an incident that prompted Farage to resign his Clacton seat before winning it back in a subsequent by-election and being sworn in on Monday.1 Geoghegan's Democracy for Sale blog previously covered remarks by journalist Isabel Oakeshott regarding Harborne.1 Crick authored a biography of Farage published in 2022.1
Laura Davison, general secretary of the National Union of Journalists, characterized the exclusions as reflective of a "broader pattern of harassment and obstruction" directed at journalists.1 The Conservative Party and Labour Party similarly blocked or removed journalists from their respective conferences last year.1
