President Trump issued an executive order last week directing the renaming of Lake Ontario, which straddles the US-Canada border, to "Lake America."1 In response, Apple began displaying "Lake America" to US users of its Maps application starting Wednesday morning, while users outside the United States continue to see the original name "Lake Ontario."1 Google Maps similarly implemented the change over the weekend, citing compliance with Trump's directive and the naming conventions of the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).1
The move has drawn sharp criticism from Canadian officials.
