Law firm Edelson PC has filed 30 new lawsuits against OpenAI, building on seven cases it brought in April, alleging the company failed to report a user's discussions of gun violence and attack plans to law enforcement.1 The lawsuits stem from a February 10 shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in Canada carried out by Jesse Van Rootselaar, who killed eight people and injured dozens.1
According to the complaints, OpenAI employees flagged Van Rootselaar's activity on ChatGPT, where he discussed firearms violence and plans to attack, and urged company leadership to alert Canadian authorities.1 Rather than report the threat, OpenAI decided only to deactivate the account, after which Van Rootselaar created a new one.1 The lawsuits name Chris Lehane, OpenAI's Global Affairs Director, as the person responsible for ordering staff not to contact law enforcement, characterizing his background as prioritizing public relations over safety.1
The new legal actions mark a significant escalation in allegations against OpenAI, being the first to charge the company with "active assistance and abetment" rather than negligence in failing to prevent the attack.1 OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon countered that Van Rootselaar's activity did not meet the company's threshold for reporting "imminent and credible threats" to law enforcement.1 The lawsuits point to an incident in November 2025 when OpenAI immediately closed its offices and called police over activist threats without any signs of imminent risk, suggesting inconsistent application of its threat assessment standards.1
