Italy transferred its decommissioned aircraft carrier Garibaldi to Indonesia without charge in April 2024, with formal handover expected in mid-to-late September.1 The vessel, which had been retired in 2024, displaces 14,000 tons at full load and can accommodate either 16 AV-8B Harrier jets or 18 helicopters.1 By relinquishing the aging warship—which had served for over 40 years and suffered from hull deterioration and declining mechanical performance—Italy avoided costly maintenance and decommissioning expenses while providing Indonesia its first aircraft carrier.1
The strategic transaction has yielded significant returns for Italy's defense sector. Following this transfer, Italy has secured approximately $4 billion in military contracts from Indonesia, including at least two guided-missile frigates, six small submarines, and twelve light combat aircraft.1 Upon handover to Indonesia, the Garibaldi will have its air defense and anti-ship weapons systems removed to be classified as a non-combat vessel, but Indonesia plans to modernize and upgrade the carrier while expanding its Lampung naval port to accommodate the new acquisition.1
