A Sydney private school has partnered with the University of Sydney to investigate how generative artificial intelligence affects children's education, responding to a significant gap in local research on the subject.1 A systematic review of 271 globally peer-reviewed studies conducted by researchers at the University of Sydney and Kew College Research Institute found that only four studies originated from Australia, and notably, none examined middle school students.1
The research reveals a complex picture of AI's educational impact. According to scholar Natasha Arthars from the University of Sydney, "AI itself is neither good nor bad for learning, but depends on three factors: student characteristics, the specific tool, and the cultural context of the education system."1 While generative AI can increase student motivation and engagement, the benefits remain contradictory, as the technology does not necessarily improve comprehension.1 The research also identified a risk that AI tools may increase student dependency.1
In response to these concerns, the New South Wales Department of Education has already taken several precautionary measures.1 The department operates an internal generative AI chatbot designed to guide students and has reduced homework assignments to prevent AI cheating.1 A government spokesperson for NSW Education Minister Prue Car stated that measures are being considered to prevent AI from substituting for students' own thinking and creative work.1 The urgency of developing a coordinated approach is underscored by a statement signed by more than 60 experts, who characterize Australia's response to generative AI in education as "fragmented, stalled, and inconsistent."1
