Ryanair has cautioned that European short-haul airline ticket prices will rise significantly if crude oil costs stay at current levels, with some competitors potentially unable to survive the coming winter.1 The airline has revised its annual passenger target downward from 216 million to 214 million, while projecting winter passenger numbers to remain broadly flat compared to the prior year.1 Summer passenger volumes are expected to grow by more than 5 percent, climbing from 138 million to 145 million between April and October.1
The carrier attributed the adjustment partly to persistent fuel costs, which currently stand at $140 per barrel, equivalent to £104.1 Ryanair has hedged 80 percent of its jet fuel requirements at $67 per barrel and expects to remain profitable despite the headwinds, though earnings will fall short of the record profits achieved in the previous year.1 The airline plans to cut losses by between €70 million and €100 million during the winter period.1 According to Ryanair's statement, carriers with less hedging protection will face mounting pressure to raise fares to offset higher fuel expenses or may lack the financial capacity to sustain operations.1
