The "Stay BA·Play Together" national public welfare basketball initiative recently took place in Shenzhen, bringing together left-behind children's teams from across the country for selection trials.1 Among the participating squads was the "Yulutiananxia" team from Haiyuan County in Ningxia, comprised of seven Hui Muslim players aged twelve to fifteen.1 Though not all registered teams appeared on the court, the initiative—jointly launched by Southern Metropolis Daily and Beijing Yuanwang Charity Foundation—demonstrated basketball's power to inspire and motivate young athletes from remote regions.1
For many of these children, the sport has become a tangible source of hope. Ma Zimchen, a seventh-grade student, found confidence and aspiration on the basketball court following his father's death.1 Meanwhile, team leader Ma Yulu, who returned to her hometown after university graduation to become a high school information technology teacher, has worked alongside local coaches to build pathways for these youth.1 Under the guidance of Haiyuan County Ruide Public Welfare Service Center director Tian Xingfu and coach Tian Jinhu, the young players have been developing their skills and dreaming of distant possibilities.1 Though Ningxia is situated in one of the world's most inhospitable regions, where annual evaporation exceeds rainfall by a factor of five, the basketball initiative has provided these children with a bridge to broader horizons.1
