The European Union has initiated high-level talks to coordinate a response to a drone attack on Leipzig airport, after Germany formally attributed responsibility to Moscow.12 EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced that she would chair an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers on September 2 in County Wicklow, Ireland, to discuss the incident.1 Kallas characterized the attack as bearing "all the hallmarks of state-sponsored terrorism" and called for strengthened sanctions against Russia and increased support for Ukraine.1
Germany's government confirmed that it had determined Russia was responsible for the failed drone strike on Leipzig/Halle airport the previous month.2 Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated: "Taking into account the police investigation, the pattern of crime and intelligence findings, it can be confirmed that Russia is responsible for the failed attack on Leipzig airport."2 Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock noted that the "drone configuration, components, explosives and detonation systems" were consistent with Russia's other hybrid warfare operations.2 In response, both the EU and France summoned Russian diplomatic representatives to lodge formal protests.12 The EU is preparing approximately 1,600 new sanctions targets related to Russia's war in Ukraine.2 Russian officials, including President Putin, have denied the allegations and accused Germany of fabricating the facts.2
