Tyler Robinson, 23, entered a not guilty plea to seven charges, including felony murder, in connection with the September 10, 2025 shooting death of conservative activist and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University in Orem.1 District Judge Tony Graf ruled that prosecutors have sufficient evidence to proceed to trial and authorized them to seek the death penalty, citing aggravating factors including that the suspect fired at a target surrounded by crowds with children present.1
Kirk, 31, was struck in the neck while delivering a speech to over 3,000 people on campus, shot from a rooftop more than 400 feet away.2 Prosecutors presented multiple forms of evidence against Robinson, including DNA evidence linking him to the weapon and shell casings engraved with "Hey Fascist! CATCH!", text messages in which he wrote "I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can't be negotiated out," and a handwritten note stating "I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I took it."2 An unfired round remained in the rifle, which prosecutors argued indicated the shooter was prepared to fire again.2 Robinson surrendered the day after the shooting.1 Prosecutors also cited testimony from Robinson's roommate Lance Twiggs and stated there is "a mountain of evidence that proves that he is the shooter."1
