Approximately 3.42 million sanitation workers across China are laboring in thick, non-breathable long-sleeved uniforms during high temperatures, creating serious occupational health risks.1 A recent investigation by China News in Fujian, Hunan, and other regions found that current uniform designs trap heat and moisture against workers' bodies, severely impeding perspiration and heat dissipation.1
Reporters who conducted firsthand testing discovered that within just ten minutes of wearing the uniform, sweat saturated their inner clothing when ambient temperatures exceeded 38 degrees Celsius.1 The uniform fabric lacks water resistance and suffers from poor breathability due to its sealed construction, directly preventing effective cooling and creating conditions conducive to heat stroke and potentially life-threatening heat exhaustion.1 Workers report that in sweltering conditions, their uniforms become completely soaked multiple times throughout a single workday.1
The health implications are substantial. Sanitation workers and other outdoor laborers account for 10 to 20 percent of heat-related medical cases treated by hospitals during summer months.1 Cases of heat stroke and confirmed heat exhaustion among sanitation workers have been documented in Fujian and Sichuan.1 Meanwhile, these workers complete approximately 150 billion square meters of road cleaning and sanitation daily while managing more than 900,000 tons of municipal waste, with the workforce in Fujian averaging over 50 years of age.1
