Prominent Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa has condemned the European Commission's decision to withdraw funding from the Venice Biennale Foundation over the inclusion of a Russian pavilion at the exhibition.1 The EU has revoked a multi-year grant of €2.2 million to the foundation in response to organisers' choice to allow Russia's participation.1
Loznitsa dismissed the funding cut as a disproportionate response, stating: "I would never personally visit the Russian pavilion, but cutting funding to the Venice Biennale is like kindergarten-style punishment."1 The filmmaker argued that the real issue lies not in the existence of the Russian pavilion but rather in European companies' increased imports of Russian liquefied natural gas, which rose by 17 per cent in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2025.1 The Russian pavilion, which features an exhibition titled "Roots Planted in Sky," is scheduled to remain open to the public only until 9 May.1
The EU has committed to achieving a complete ban on Russian natural gas by 2027.1
