The State Administration of Cultural Heritage has released the "Interim Measures for the Transfer and Management of Artifacts Unearthed or Recovered from Archaeological Excavations," which enters into trial operation from its date of publication for a two-year period.1 The measures establish standardized procedures and oversight mechanisms for the transfer of archaeological artifacts discovered throughout China.1
Under the new framework, archaeological excavation units must transfer artifacts to designated receiving institutions within six months following the submission of their excavation reports.1 Receiving institutions are subsequently required to complete registration, cataloging, and classification of the transferred artifacts within one year of receipt.1 These requirements apply to all artifacts obtained through archaeological activities conducted in the underground, inland waters, territorial seas, and other jurisdictional maritime areas of the People's Republic of China.1
