Australia's Help to Buy shared equity program, launched by the federal government in December 2024, had approved approximately 4,800 participants by the end of June 2025.1 Melbourne dominated the scheme's uptake, accounting for nearly one-third of all approvals nationally, while no Sydney suburbs appeared among the top ten most popular locations.1
The typical participant borrowed $425,000 and contributed an average deposit of $31,000.1 Just over half of applicants were aged 35 or under, with 56 percent applying as sole purchasers.1 Purchase price caps varied by city: Sydney capped at $1.3 million, Melbourne at $950,000, Brisbane at $1 million, and Perth at $850,000.1 Melbourne's median house price of $787,000 ranked as the third-lowest among Australia's capital cities.1
Bank Australia has settled approximately 1,000 loans under the scheme, with roughly half sourced through mortgage brokers.1 Four mutual banks joined the program in July and will introduce broker channels from October 6.1
