Western Australia's government has endorsed a plan to merge the region's two major coal mining operators, Premier and Griffin, as the state prepares for the closure of its coal-fired power station in 2029.1 The Collie Basin Merger Taskforce report recommends the consolidation to achieve economies of scale and integrate the workforce ahead of the industry's shutdown.1
The state government has committed over 700 million Australian dollars to manage the transition, with an additional 58.7 million dollars in targeted funding.1 This new investment includes 16.8 million dollars for a labor transition program covering voluntary redundancies and other workforce support measures, 39 million dollars for infrastructure development at the Coolangatta industrial estate, and 28 million dollars for broader basin-wide revitalization and planning initiatives.1 The government will also designate Collie as a state development area to expedite business approval processes.1 More than 1,000 workers are affected by the power station closure.1
Griffin Mining is currently under administration and has received 240 million dollars in government subsidies to date.1 The state government expects to complete merger discussions within the coming year, with mining operations set to cease around 2030–2031.1 Premier Roger Cook stated that "we have a number of proposals on the table, including one operator working with another operator, as well as a third-party operator," indicating multiple pathways are being considered for managing the transition.1
