The School of Leadership, Afghanistan (SOLA), founded by Shabana Basij-Rasikh, has established a permanent campus in Rwanda after the organization was forced to flee Afghanistan.1 The move came following the Taliban's prohibition on girls attending school beyond sixth grade in 2021, prompting SOLA to relocate its operations to continue its educational mission.1
The Rwanda campus now enrolls 122 girls, marking the largest cohort in SOLA's history since its founding in Kabul in 2016.1 This physical school represents a crucial response to a growing crisis: approximately 2.4 million Afghan girls have been excluded from secondary education according to an August UN report.1 The demand far exceeds available capacity, with over 99 percent of applications from Afghan girls rejected annually despite thousands submitting requests each year.1
Beyond the Rwanda location, SOLA has expanded its reach through SOLAx, an online platform launched in 2024 that provides free remote education via WhatsApp, currently serving 41,000 students primarily in Afghanistan and 76 other countries.1 All SOLA programs operate without charge to students, supported entirely by global donors.1 In recognition of her work, Shabana Basij-Rasikh received a $20 million grant from Melinda French Gates in 2024, awarded to her as one of twelve leaders receiving similar support.1
