Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed more than 40 employees over corruption and financial misconduct in the past three years, according to the agency's chairman.1 More than five of the dismissed officials have been prosecuted.1
Since taking office in October 2023, the chairman has implemented internal reforms aimed at strengthening institutional integrity.1 These measures include establishing a Department of Ethics and Integrity and introducing a gift declaration policy requiring officials to report gifts above a certain threshold.1 Between October 2023 and July 2026, the EFCC received 49,673 petitions, investigated 39,615 cases, filed 14,476 prosecutions, and secured 10,872 convictions.1 In the first half of 2026 alone, the commission achieved 1,370 convictions and filed 1,889 prosecutions.1 The agency reported a conviction rate exceeding 75 percent and recovered 1.23 trillion Nigerian naira, equivalent to $925 million or £683 million, during this period.1
