Following a series of shark attacks, Sydney's beaches have launched an ambitious drone surveillance program to enhance water safety and encourage swimmers to return. The New South Wales government has invested 34 million Australian dollars in the initiative 1, which commenced on July 1st with continuous dawn-to-dusk monitoring across 38 Sydney beaches 1. The broader program encompasses 70 beaches across New South Wales, all subject to the same dawn-to-dusk surveillance protocol 1.
Since the program's launch, drone operators have identified more than 750 sharks and conducted over 200 intervention operations 1. Shark tracking stations are currently monitoring 1,698 white sharks, 938 tiger sharks, and 374 bull sharks across the region 1. According to drone operator Taha Kafil-Hussain, the response time from detection of a potential threat to full beach evacuation is approximately two to three minutes 1. The program was prompted in part by a June attack in which 34-year-old teacher and mother Leah Stewart was bitten by a four-meter white shark, resulting in the amputation of her left arm 1.
University of Sydney shark policy expert Christopher Pepin-Neff has endorsed the technological approach, stating that "drones are the best technology we currently have available" 1.
