The Society of Professional Journalists, established in 1909, is undertaking its first substantive revision to its ethics code in twelve years, marking only the sixth major update in the guidelines' century-long history.1 The new draft, finalized at a conference in Indianapolis in June, expands the existing code by 73 words to a total of 967 words and addresses contemporary challenges including artificial intelligence's role in journalism, the integration of independent creators, and efforts to rebuild public trust in media.1 The updated guidelines are scheduled for a vote by the broader membership in October.1
The four core principles underlying the code remain unchanged: seeking truth and reporting it, minimizing harm, acting independently, and being accountable and transparent.1 However, the revision introduces several substantive updates to address modern journalism concerns.1 The new language specifies that speed, technology, or medium cannot serve as justification for inaccuracy or unfairness.1 Additionally, journalists are directed to remain vigilant and boldly oppose those in power, while the framing of "giving voice to the voiceless" has been reworded as "opposing unfair marginalization of those with less power."1 These changes reflect evolving industry practices, particularly as approximately one-third of journalists were freelancers or self-employed as of 2023, according to Pew Research.1
