Tropical Storm Saudeleur, the 18th typhoon of the season, made landfall in Zhejiang Province on August 28 before weakening and ceasing to be tracked by forecasters on August 30.1 Following a 31-hour hiatus, the storm's residual circulation system re-intensified over the South China Sea, regaining tropical storm strength in the early hours of September 1, prompting the China Meteorological Administration to resume forecasting under the original typhoon name and designation.1
The reactivation was driven by favorable atmospheric conditions over the South China Sea, including abundant moisture from the summer monsoon and sea surface temperatures exceeding 28 degrees Celsius, according to Liu Longsheng, the chief forecaster at the China Meteorological Administration.1 As of September 1 at 9:00 a.m., Saudeleur's center was located approximately 435 kilometers south-southwest of Shanwei City in Guangdong Province, with maximum sustained winds of 8 on the Beaufort scale (18 meters per second).1 The system was moving east-northeast at a speed of 25 to 30 kilometers per hour.1
The reactivated storm is expected to gradually weaken while turning cyclonically over the northeastern South China Sea beginning September 3.1 Over the next three days, parts of eastern Jiangnan and eastern South China are forecast to experience heavy to torrential rainfall.1
