The New South Wales government has unveiled plans for Cammeray Park, a 2.5-hectare green space to be constructed alongside the Warringah Freeway, Sydney's busiest motorway.1 The park will open in late 2028, coinciding with the completion of the WestConnex project.1
The new park will feature synthetic turf sports facilities, basketball and pickleball courts, open lawns, gardens, and outdoor fitness equipment.1 However, residents will need to wait at least two years before accessing these amenities.1 The WestConnex project carries a price tag of A$7.6 billion and includes a 6.5-kilometer three-lane tunnel.1
The development comes at an environmental cost, with 3,000 mature trees set to be removed during the road upgrade.1 To mitigate this loss, the government plans to plant 6,000 replacement trees.1 North Sydney Lord Mayor Zoe Baker acknowledged the trade-off, stating it represents "a net loss, but better than the worst-case scenario."1 Transport Minister Jenny Aitchison described the park as a "lush oasis" adjacent to the motorway.1
