Former Australian Football League player Dale Thomas has been sued by the Australian Taxation Office over unpaid income tax spanning multiple financial years.1 The tax authority filed legal action in July seeking approximately $600,000 in total claims, comprising outstanding tax assessments, interest charges, and penalties.1
According to the taxation office, Thomas owes $52,538 for the 2021-22 financial year, $129,142 for 2022-23, $134,259 for 2023-24, and $189,613 for 2024-25.1 Interest fees amount to $93,176, with an additional $1,565 penalty for failure to lodge tax returns, bringing the total to $599,293 as of July 16.1 The tax authority had issued nine notices to Thomas beginning in May 2022, and subsequently revised its assessment for the 2021-22 financial year on October 3, 2024, increasing the claim by a further $85,839.65.1
Thomas indicated that his accountant would negotiate with the taxation office to resolve the matter.1 The 14-year career player appeared in 258 matches across his time with Collingwood and Carlton, and was part of the team that won the Premiership in 2010.1
