A 17-year-old boy has been found guilty of murdering 16-year-old Oscar Hamilton, who was stabbed at a shopping centre in Melbourne's western suburbs in September 2024.12 The Victorian Supreme Court jury deliberated for less than two hours before returning a guilty verdict on Tuesday afternoon.1 The defendant, who was 15 years old at the time of the killing, stabbed the victim three times, including strikes to vital areas of the chest.1
The defence argued that the teenager had no intention to kill Hamilton and merely sought to confront him, characterizing the incident as a tragic outcome of a fight between two boys.1 However, prosecutors contended that the defendant deliberately carried a knife to the shopping centre and targeted vital organs with his strikes.1 Crown prosecutor Erin Ramsey stated: "This is not the tragic consequence of two boys fighting."1 The jury rejected the defence's claims about the circumstances of the attack.1
The teenager will face a pre-sentence hearing at a later date.1
