A major report from the Institute for Public Policy Research reveals a sharp surge in loneliness and social isolation among young people aged 11 to 24 in England.1 The proportion of young people without close friends has risen from 1% in 2014 to 5% in 2025, while the share of 16- to 21-year-olds reporting at least three close friendships has fallen from 85% to 72% over the same period.1 Among 14- to 15-year-olds, satisfaction with friendships declined from 86% between 2012 and 2014 to 76% between 2023 and 2025.1
The thinktank attributes this deterioration to a combination of austerity policies, the pandemic, social media, and reductions in public services.1 Avnee Morjaria, deputy director of IPPR, stated that "we have stripped away too many of the places, services and pathways that help young people build confidence, connection and hope."1 The research, which draws on interviews with 150 young people alongside analysis of official data, also highlights broader economic pressures facing this generation.1 First-time homebuyers now average 34 years of age, and nearly one in five young people spend half their income on rent.1
