As the new school term approaches, many students and parents experience anxiety and nervousness. According to Ren Feng, director of the Psychiatry and Psychology Department at Peking University Shougang Hospital, back-to-school anxiety often manifests through somatic symptoms such as headaches and abdominal pain.1 He emphasizes that parents should distinguish between normal anxiety emotions and clinical anxiety disorder, as the severity, duration, and presentation patterns differ between the two.1
Ren Feng recommends several strategies to help children manage back-to-school anxiety.1 Parents should accept and validate their children's emotions rather than dismissing them.1 Adjusting sleep schedules gradually is particularly important—children should go to bed 15 to 30 minutes earlier each night and wake up 15 to 30 minutes earlier than during summer vacation.1 Maintaining open communication with children is also essential.1 Ren notes that children may feel comfortable expressing generalized anxiety but avoid stating directly that they do not want to return to school.1
The increase in adolescent outpatient visits around the start of school has been significant, with numbers roughly doubling compared to five years ago, with nearly 30 percent of such patients being adolescents.1 Back-to-school syndrome is not a formal medical diagnosis but rather represents a collection of physical and psychological symptoms resulting from difficulty adapting to the new school term.1
