Starting October 1, 2026, Australia will transition its COVID-19 vaccination program from universal free access to a targeted approach, moving the scheme into the National Immunisation Program (NIP) 1. The new policy will limit free vaccines to adults aged 75 and over, who can receive a dose every six months, and adults aged 65 to 74, eligible for vaccination annually 1. Additionally, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 to 74 and immunocompromised individuals aged 18 and above will retain eligibility for free vaccines 1.
The policy shift has prompted concern from health experts about vulnerable populations losing access to free protection. Professor Adrian Esterman warned that millions of people with chronic conditions including diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and other chronic illnesses who previously received free vaccines will no longer be eligible 1. Current vaccination uptake among priority groups remains below target levels, with only 25 percent of people aged 75 and over vaccinated in the past six months and approximately 19 percent of those aged 65 to 74 vaccinated over the past year 1. The variant NB.1.8.1 currently dominates in Australia 1, while case numbers have declined significantly, with 64,357 cases recorded so far in 2026 compared to 146,232 cases during the corresponding period in 2025, representing a 56 percent decrease 1.
