The Financial Conduct Authority has initiated a market review into child trust fund providers following discovery of approximately 760,000 unclaimed accounts worth £1.5 billion in total1. The regulator has cautioned consumers against using fee-charging claims management companies to locate their accounts, noting that individuals can track down their funds free of charge through HM Revenue and Customs1. Some claims management firms charge as much as £400 to locate a single account or levy monthly fees1. Child trust funds were established for approximately 6.3 million children born between September 1, 2002 and January 2, 2011, with each account receiving initial government backing of at least £2501. The accounts are scheduled to mature in 20291.
