A Utah judge is set to determine Tuesday whether sufficient evidence exists to proceed with a murder trial against 23-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.1 The incident occurred in September at Utah Valley University during an open campus event, where Robinson allegedly fired from a rooftop more than 400 feet away.1 Robinson surrendered to authorities the day after the shooting but has not entered a plea.1
Prosecutors contend they possess overwhelming evidence supporting the charges against Robinson.1 This evidence includes DNA analysis linking Robinson to the suspected murder weapon—a bolt-action rifle—and tools used to engrave bullets, as well as writings and communications that prosecutors argue reveal Robinson's political motivation.1 One of the engraved bullets bore the inscription "Hey Facist! CATCH!"—which prosecutors characterize as an explicit political reference.1 Handwritten notes attributed to Robinson stated "I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I took it."1 Text messages attributed to Robinson further stated "I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can't be negotiated out."1 Additionally, Robinson's romantic partner told investigators that Robinson expressed the day after Kirk's death that "he wished he hadn't done it."1
Judge Tony Graf will preside over the preliminary hearing scheduled for 10 a.m. MDT on Tuesday.1
