Florida is set to carry out its 14th execution of the year on Tuesday afternoon at 6 p.m., when 74-year-old Harold Gene Lucas will be put to death by three-drug lethal injection 1. Lucas was sentenced to death for the 1976 shooting death of 16-year-old Jill Piper and the wounding of two of her companions, crimes for which he received five separate death sentences imposed by two different judges 1. After spending 50 years on death row, Lucas has abandoned all appeals, stating: "I've been on death row 50 years. I don't want to continue. The sooner the better, I'm tired" 1.
Tuesday's execution marks the first of three death sentences Florida plans to carry out in September 1. The state has become the nation's deadliest jurisdiction for capital punishment, with 19 executions in 2025 alone—the highest number since Florida resumed capital punishment in 1976 1. This accounts for more than half of the 47 executions carried out across the United States in 2025 1. Two additional executions are scheduled to follow Lucas's: Daniel Owen Conahan on September 10 and Curtis Wilkie Beasley on September 29 1.
