Urumqi's Third Primary School has been officially designated as "Urumqi Zuo Zongtang Primary School," marking the second educational institution in Xinjiang to bear the name of the Qing Dynasty general 1. This follows the renaming of Hami's First Primary School to "Hami Zuo Zongtang Primary School" in October of the previous year 1.
The move reflects an intensified campaign by Beijing authorities to commemorate Zuo Zongtang's military campaigns, which resulted in the recovery of most of Xinjiang's territory in 1876 1. Since Chen Xiaojian, former deputy director of the Central United Front Work Department, took office in Xinjiang last year, multiple commemorative initiatives have been launched, including the construction of schools, erection of statues, and organization of academic conferences dedicated to Zuo Zongtang 1. These efforts include the unveiling of historical markers at the sites of Zuo Zongtang's final campaign in Hetian County on January 4, the dedication of a statue titled "Zuo Gong's Recovery of Xinjiang" in Hami on August 22, and the convening of an academic symposium on "Zuo Zongtang and Frontier Governance" in Hami on August 23 1. The campaign also encompasses the broadcast of a major historical documentary titled "Zuo Zongtang's Recovery of Xinjiang" in 2025 and President Xi Jinping's visit to a Zuo Zongtang cultural memorial exhibition in March 2021 1.
