Renowned fashion designer John Galliano has withdrawn from a planned solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York. 1 In a statement posted on Instagram, Galliano explained that "after careful consideration, I have decided that now is not the right time to proceed with this exhibition." 1

The withdrawal follows intense public backlash sparked by renewed scrutiny of Galliano's 2011 antisemitic remarks. 1 A French court had ruled that Galliano violated hate crime laws after he made inflammatory statements in a bar, including saying "I love Hitler" and references to gas chambers. 1 The revelation of these comments had previously led to his dismissal from Dior, where he served as creative director for 15 years. 1 The exhibition announcement reignited opposition from Jewish leaders, politicians, and major museum donors, including prominent art collector Arne Glimcher, who threatened to remove the museum from his estate. 1 New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin characterized the planned exhibition as a "blow" to the Jewish community. 1
