Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell have filed suit against Anthropic in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accusing the AI laboratory of conducting what they characterize as a "brazen" campaign of illegal piracy and scraping of copyrighted musical works to train the Claude model.12 The complaint names Anthropic along with co-founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann as defendants.1
The plaintiffs allege that Anthropic unlawfully downloaded and processed tens of thousands of copyrighted compositions without authorization.2 Under the terms of the lawsuit, plaintiffs are seeking damages of up to $150,000 per work, with an additional $25,000 per instance for deletion of copyrighted data, potentially resulting in total damages reaching into the billions of dollars.2 An Anthropic spokesperson responded to the allegations by stating: "We disagree with the publishers' claims and intend to vigorously defend ourselves in court."1
This latest action represents one of multiple intellectual property disputes facing Anthropic.1 The same legal team representing the current plaintiffs previously handled cases brought by Concord Music Group and Universal Music Group in January.1 In the separate case of Bartz v. Anthropic, a court awarded a $1.5 billion judgment against the company, determining that while using copyrighted works for training purposes can be lawful, obtaining that content through piracy is not.1
