The production of "Welcome to Dragon Restaurant" constructed an extensive set spanning over 100,000 square meters with more than 200 buildings across multiple locations in China, according to art director Li Miao in a recent interview.1 Rather than filming overseas, the crew built this full-scale street district domestically, with scenes shot in Egypt accounting for less than 5% of the entire film.1
The production design involved meticulous attention to detail across multiple elements. A towering ancient tree standing 16.5 meters high was constructed over five to six months in Shizuishan's Shitanjing district in Ningxia, serving as a centerpiece set piece.1 For the extended long takes featured in the film, the restaurant's interior scenes were relocated outdoors to accommodate camera movement.1 The film's concluding sequences—including a Boy Scout school, checkpoint, and border village—were also constructed within the Shitanjing site.1
The food design itself reflected the same commitment to authenticity; the production team developed over 40 dishes and conducted interviews with three separate chefs over three to four months to perfect the culinary elements.1 Combined preparation and shooting took approximately one and a half years from start to finish.1
Li Miao emphasized that art direction differs fundamentally from conventional architecture and interior design work.1 "Complete replication isn't necessarily the best approach," she explained, characterizing her craft as closer to painting or sculpture.1 The ultimate objective of scenic design, she stressed, is to reconstruct the psychological reality that audiences experience rather than achieve literal accuracy.1
