Researchers from Chulabhorn Royal Academy and Kasetsart University have identified a previously unknown lizard species in the western highlands of Thailand. The newly described species, scientifically named Acanthosaura syrax, was discovered in Mae Wong National Park in Tak-Kamphaeng Phet Province at elevations above 1,300 meters 1.
The species is named after Syrax, a dragon from the television series "Game of Thrones" 1. The creature displays distinctive yellow-green coloring and ranks as the smallest member of the Acanthosaura genus, which currently contains 23 recognized species 1. Despite its diminutive size, the species produces a relatively large clutch of eggs and possesses notably reduced spinal ridges along its neck 1. Genetic analysis confirmed that Acanthosaura syrax is genetically distinct from its closest relative, A. lepidogaster 1.
