U.S. military website The War Zone has disclosed that a Chinese air force base near Lop Nor in Xinjiang is undergoing significant expansion, according to satellite imagery recently captured by Planet Labs.1 The construction includes new parallel taxiways and multiple large hangars designed to accommodate advanced military aircraft.1
The expansion work features a new taxiway running parallel to the runway that will connect the central apron and main hangar, complemented by four newly constructed large hangars each measuring approximately 80 by 40 meters.1 Geospatial intelligence analyst Damien Symon assessed the development, noting that the main apron underwent substantial enlargement in 2023 with the addition of large-scale hangars, followed by the construction of tactical fixed-wing aircraft hangars on both sides of the apron in 2025.1 Construction efforts accelerated further starting in May 2025.1 The War Zone speculated that these infrastructure upgrades may be preparing for testing of next-generation military aircraft such as the H-20 stealth bomber, though it emphasized that no evidence currently confirms the H-20 will be tested at this facility.1
