China's Ministry of Education has announced 27 new specializations in its 2026 vocational education professional directory, with multiple artificial intelligence-focused programs set to begin enrolling students in 2027.1 The new offerings include embodied intelligent computing technology, humanoid robot engineering technology, commercial artificial intelligence applications, and intelligent agent communication technology.1
The expansion reflects a broader transformation underway in vocational institutions nationwide. Nearly 50% of higher vocational colleges have already introduced general artificial intelligence courses, while 71.5% of vocational school students are utilizing generative AI for knowledge expansion.1 Additionally, 67.33% of vocational institutions have deployed AI to enhance teaching efficiency.1 The Ministry of Education and four other government departments jointly issued the "Artificial Intelligence + Education Action Plan" in April this year.1
Regional initiatives demonstrate growing momentum in AI-integrated workforce development. Guangdong Province is implementing a "3+4" middle-to-undergraduate articulation pilot program involving 23 bachelor's degree institutions and 75 secondary vocational schools, with an enrollment target of 2,620 students—representing a sevenfold increase from the previous year.1 Beijing University of Science and Technology established a targeted humanoid robot program in partnership with industry partners, initially selecting 21 students and planning to recruit an additional cohort in September this year.1
At the national level, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security has incorporated more than 20 new AI-related occupations in its official job classifications over the past five years, with 12 additional positions—including embodied intelligent robot application technician—proposed for recognition in July this year.1 These developments signal a fundamental shift in vocational training priorities, transitioning from single-skill technical operations toward cultivating digitally-literate composite workers capable of human-machine collaboration.1
