Following a massive exodus of teams, the restructured Pac-12, no longer an automatic-qualifying Power Five conference, has been downgraded to a Group of Six league, making its path to the College Football Playoff (CFP) more challenging 1. The Group of Six conference is guaranteed one CFP spot, which is awarded to the highest-ranked team within that group 1. To rebuild, the Pac-12 has added six football programs: Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State, Utah State, Texas State, and Fresno State 1. Additionally, Gonzaga has joined the Pac-12 for basketball 1.
To improve its chances of securing a CFP berth, the newly configured Pac-12 will implement a unique "flex" schedule during the final week of the regular season 1. These flex games will not count toward conference standings, and the matchups will be determined six days in advance 1.
