Kew Gardens is preparing to cut down rare, untransplantable trees and relocate or sacrifice approximately 1,000 plants to facilitate the renovation of its Victorian Palm House 1. Palm House manager Will Spoelstra stated, “There are some sad moments ahead” 1. The structure consists of 16,000 pieces of glass, and its ironwork is rusting while the glass is warped and damaged 1. The renovation project is planned to start in 2027, provided that funding is raised in time, and is expected to last for about 50 years 1. Kew Gardens will launch a "Save London's Rainforest" fundraising campaign this October 1.
During the renovation, Kew scientists will conserve endangered plants by collecting seeds and taking cuttings, and will conduct wild conservation and reintroduction work 1. The Eastern Cape giant cycad has been growing at Kew since 1775 and is the world's oldest potted plant 1. Ravenea Moorei is native to the Comoros Islands; the Kew specimen was a male plant, and an expedition to the Comoros successfully found a wild population, from which 10 seedlings have now been cultivated 1. Ramosmania rodriguesii was successfully cultivated from cuttings of the only surviving tree on Rodrigues Island in Mauritius and has been reintroduced to the wild 1. Tom Pickering stated, “We can play a major part in conserving plants in the wild” 1.
