A $2.8 billion settlement agreement has enabled colleges to distribute more than $20 million annually directly to athletes, yet the overwhelming majority of these funds have flowed to football and basketball programs.1 This concentration of resources has raised concerns among university sports advocates about the financial viability of women's sports and Olympic disciplines.
College athletic programs produce approximately three-quarters of America's Olympic athletes, making their funding sustainability a matter of national significance.1 Recognizing the growing disparity, advocates are pressing philanthropists to direct donations specifically toward women's sports and Olympic programs rather than allowing market forces to determine resource allocation. Rebecca Paul demonstrated such commitment by donating $12 million to Butler University's women's sports fund.1 Danette Leighton, CEO of the Women's Sports Foundation, emphasized this need, stating: "There are a lot of philanthropists that are really passionate about women's sports or men's Olympic sports. They should make sure that that's where their funding is going directly."1 Meanwhile, some lawmakers have proposed legislative measures requiring targeted protections and dedicated funding for Olympic and women's athletic programs.1
