The World Intellectual Property Organization released findings on July 14 showing that SoftBank Group topped the global rankings for generative AI patents with 2,985 filings disclosed between 2014 and 2025.1 Six of the ten leading patent holders are Chinese enterprises or institutions, including Tencent and Baidu.1 The surge in generative AI innovation is evident in the filing trends, with more than 56,000 generative AI-related patents disclosed in 2024 and 2025 alone, exceeding the cumulative total from the preceding decade.1
Major technology companies secured notable positions in the rankings, though their patent volumes remain substantially below SoftBank's lead.1 Alphabet, Google's parent company, registered 1,083 patents to rank seventh, while Microsoft filed 865 patents to place ninth.1 In contrast, OpenAI disclosed only 35 patents globally during the period analyzed.1 SoftBank's strong position in generative AI innovation is further underscored by its internal competition initiative, which had accumulated over 260,000 ideas by January 2026.1
