A U.S. federal judge has approved a $1.5 billion copyright settlement between AI startup Anthropic and thousands of authors and publishers whose works were allegedly used without permission to train the Claude chatbot. [1][2]
Federal Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín granted approval to the agreement, which covers more than 482,000 books and provides meaningful relief to affected rights holders. [1][2] Under the settlement terms, authors and publishers will receive approximately $3,000 per title on average. [1][2] More than 91 percent of rights holders have already claimed their compensation. [2]
The settlement addresses a lawsuit initially filed in 2024 by authors including Andrea Bartz, alleging that Anthropic used pirated books to train its AI model. [1][2] Plaintiff attorney Justin Nelson characterized the agreement as "the largest known copyright recovery in history." [1][2]
Bloomsbury, the publisher behind the Harry Potter series, will receive millions in compensation as a beneficiary of the settlement.
