Guangdong province recorded cross-border payments totaling 1.4 trillion U.S. dollars in the first half of the year, representing a year-on-year increase of 17.5%, according to data released by authorities[1]. Net capital inflows reached 162.1 billion U.S. dollars, growing 10.4% compared to the same period last year[1].
Merchandise trade drove the expansion, with cross-border goods transactions rising 22.1% year-on-year, marking the fastest growth rate in five years[1]. Service trade payments grew at a more modest 16.9% year-on-year[1]. The increasing use of the Chinese yuan in cross-border settlements reinforced this momentum, with renminbi-denominated transactions climbing 24.1% year-on-year and accounting for over 55% of total cross-border payments[1].
Policy reforms also supported the expansion. As of June, 6,911 enterprises in the region had cumulatively conducted 1.06 million transactions under the cross-border trade and investment high-level opening-up pilot scheme, involving 368.8 billion U.S. dollars in transaction volume[1]. During the first half, the pilot welcomed 1,580 newly qualified enterprises, with private companies comprising 84% of the additions[1]. The State Administration of Foreign Exchange Guangdong branch revised and released an updated implementation framework for the pilot program in May of this year[1].
