Uganda has initiated a major emergency food relief operation in response to a severe hunger crisis in the eastern Karamoja region.[1] At least 19 people have died from starvation, and approximately 1.5 million residents face critical food shortages due to prolonged drought conditions.[1] The government plans to distribute 9,400 tonnes of emergency grain over two months, funded by 4.5 billion shillings (£9 million) in parliamentary-approved emergency funds.[1]
The humanitarian situation in Karamoja has deteriorated significantly following an extended dry spell, with the last meaningful rainfall recorded in April.[1] This relief initiative marks the government's first large-scale independent rescue operation following a reduction in international aid commitments to the region.[1] The World Food Programme previously halted food assistance to 63 percent of Uganda's refugee population, affecting over one million people.[1]
Sam Engola, the minister of disaster prevention and refugees, stated: "The President does not want to hear of people dying from hunger in Karamoja. I will ensure everyone gets food. No one will be left behind."[1] Agnes Kirabo, executive director of the Food Rights Alliance, characterized the transition as "not only a response to aid cuts, but also a positive shift toward national self-reliance and sustainable development."[1] The region experienced a more severe famine crisis in 2022, when deaths exceeded 2,200.[1]
