Research has uncovered a significant public health threat posed by artificially generated doctor accounts on TikTok, which are disseminating false medical advice to millions of viewers.[1] According to an analysis of 1,198 videos conducted by digital marketing company Hallam, AI-generated content accounts for 40% of trending health-related videos on the platform, with some search terms such as "health tips" showing AI-generated or AI-assisted content comprising as much as 84% of results.[1] Videos featuring fake doctors and health guidance average 2.5 million views each.[1]
The false health recommendations documented include a range of debunked claims and dangerous remedies, such as assertions that microwave-heated plastic, antiperspirant use, and keeping mobile phones beside beds cause cancer.[1] Other fraudulent advice promoted on the platform includes using Coca-Cola mixed with onions as a painkiller and a non-existent product called "Hyalethinap Plus Pro Max" marketed as an anti-aging solution.[1]
Health authorities and medical organizations have responded with urgent concern. Dr Emma Runswick, deputy chair of the British Medical Association, stated that "Platforms like TikTok must do more to stop the rise of dangerous fake medical advice."[1] Prof Frankie Swords, medical director of NHS England, reported that many clinicians have received accounts from patients expressing worry and confusion stemming from exposure to such false information.[1] A 2023 Savanta poll found that approximately one in five British adults rely on social media for health information, underscoring the potential reach and impact of such misinformation.[1]
