A former Hong Kong pro-democracy lawmaker has been granted only a week-long visit to the United Kingdom after his release from prison, forcing him to return home this Wednesday despite years of separation from his family.[1] Wu Chi-wai, who previously served as chairman of the Democratic Party, Hong Kong's largest opposition party, was detained for over five years before his recent release.[1] He was convicted in 2024 of violating the national security law, receiving a sentence of four years and five months for his involvement in an informal primary election.[1]
Wu arrived in London to reunite with his wife and son, who relocated to the United Kingdom in 2022.[1] However, British immigration authorities approved only a seven-day visitor visa beginning last Wednesday, limiting what was intended as a long-awaited family reunion.[1] Wu has stated his intention to prioritize time with his family and indicated he will not pursue political activities during his stay.[1] According to official government figures, over 230,000 Hong Kong residents have obtained special work visas in the UK, and more than 9,800 have secured settled status.[1]
