Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lashed out at New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, accusing him of "fomenting hate" following the mayor's calls for his arrest on war crimes charges.[1][2][3] Speaking on Fox News, Netanyahu stated: "He's supposed to be the mayor of all New Yorkers, Jews, Christians, Muslims, everyone, but he's trying to turn one group against the other."[2] Netanyahu has dismissed the International Criminal Court's war crimes allegations against him as "bogus" and confirmed his intention to travel to New York in September to attend the United Nations General Assembly.[1][2][3]
Mamdani had previously called for arrest of Netanyahu based on an ICC warrant issued in 2024, but subsequently acknowledged that New York City lacks the legal authority to enforce such warrants.[2][3] The mayor stated: "We do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant," and called on the federal government to intervene.[2] Despite backing away from the enforcement threat, Mamdani reiterated that Netanyahu is not welcome in the city, stating that "Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City."[2] According to the ICC, Netanyahu has been charged along with his former defense minister and a deceased Hamas leader with crimes against humanity.[3]
The dispute occurs against the backdrop of the Gaza conflict, which began when Hamas launched an attack on October 7, 2023, killing approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians.[2][3] According to Gaza's health ministry, Israeli military operations have resulted in over 73,000 deaths, with more than half being women and children.[2][3] Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly assured Netanyahu on social media that he "will not be arrested in any way in America," amid broader concerns about American bipartisan political support for Israel.[3]
